Description
A Chihuahua is a small, compact, swift-moving little dog. They have a short pointed muzzle and round, large, very dark eyes.


Size
The height of an adult Chihuahua is 6-9 inches and they weigh about 2-6 lbs.


Coat
Their are only two types of Chihuahuas, Smooth Coat Chihuahuas and Long Coat Chihuahuas. The Smooth Coats should have a soft texture, close and glossy. The Long Coats should have a soft texture, either flat or slightly curly.


Color
The standard colors for the Chihuahua are the following colors; black, black & tan, blue & tan, chocolate, chocolate & tan, cream, fawn, fawn & white, red, and black & red


Temperament
The Chihuahua is courageous, extremely lively, and proud. It likes to gives and demands affection from his owner. They are a good companion dog. They are also very alert.


Care
The short-haired coat should be gently brushed occasionally. The long coat should be brushed daily with a soft brush. Bathe once per month, without getting water in the ears. Keep the nails trimmed.


Exercise
This breed needs exercise just like other dog breeds. Don't over do it.


Training
The Chihuahua is intelligent and learns quickly with positive reinforcement. Food rewards are the best training practices to use with this breed. Training is important to remove tendencies towards misbehaviors such as barking and biting.


Shedding
This dog is considered an average shedder.


Barking & Howling
Chihuahuas will put on a display of suspiciousness and bark at approaching people and animals.


Life Expectancy
A well cared for Chihuahua can live a long time at around 15 or more years.


Health
Chihuahuas can be prone to fractures, particularly in puppies. They are also susceptible to cold, and can have wheezing and snoring problems.
